To Dwell With Us

He came to dwell with us... that's the part I can't get over. Why? Everything in my heart and soul asks the question which has already been answered. I question the grace that I've already received, I wonder at the death I've already believed in. I remember all He has done and is doing, and it breaks my heart... breaks it open to a fresh surrender, fresh belief. This time of year especially, when the joys and the griefs are equally excruciating in their impact - He is my rest. Savior of the world, Immanuel... come to dwell with us.

---

I was looking at the rooftop lights
against the blackened sky -
Lit up and glittering, shining bright,
such contrast to my cries.
Mid-December in my car,
wrestling thoughts that come
when you're alone,
and more than anything,
your soul longs for its home.

In all the frenzy and the fuss,
still that street escaped the scurry -
and in that quiet haven of mercy
I drove as slowly as I must.
One after the next, the houses marched
into the silence,
still and solemn testifying
to the Home all aspire to find.

The Home that came to dwell with us,
when we were lost and scattered -
Immanuel, still present here,
in You my soul seeks rest.
Jesus Christ, our God incarnate,
Who by your flesh lit up our darkness -
Draw me near, come draw me closer,
saving Light, please guide me home.

In rooftop lights, I see your glory,
how you loved us, wrenched and holy -
In our frailty, on streets so lonely,
You came to live and bring us life.
The red and green and softened blue
against the blackened sky,
proclaim the story the angels sang
of the Peace all aspire to find.

The Peace that once came to dwell with us,
when we were lost and scattered -
Immanuel, still present here,
In You my soul seeks rest.
Jesus Christ, our God incarnate,
Who by your flesh lit up our darkness -
Draw us near, come draw us closer,
saving Light, please guide us home.

---

Merry Christmas, everyone...

Be still and know -
be still and remember,
He is God.
